High-strength concrete is concrete with a compressive strength of 50 to 100 MPa or higher. These special mixes are used for the construction of special purpose structures, as their high strength properties allow to significantly reduce the amount of concrete and reinforcing steel used in the reinforced concrete structures. High-strength concrete is resistant to chemical attack, exposure to heat, water and radiation. It is used in the construction of multi-level structures, bridges, nuclear power plants, factories, etc. In multi-storey buildings, the use of high-strength concrete allows reduction in the cross-section of columns, while keeping the reinforcement cross-section unchanged. Switching from concrete class B25 to B45 decreases consumption of the reinforcing steel by an average of 240 kg/m3.

 

High strength performance of this concrete type is only guaranteed subject to certain conditions, including the use of high cement grades, aggregates of increased strength and cleanliness, plasticizers and admixtures needed to obtain a dense concrete structure, as well as thorough and intensive mixing and compaction of the concrete mix for the creation of favourable curing conditions.

The concrete grade is designated by an alphanumeric code (for example, M-100),which denotes the ultimate compressive strength expressed in kilograms per square centimetre. A higher value means a greater amount of cement in the composition. The grades range from M-50 to M-1000, while the most popular grades are between 100 and 500. The higher the strength grade, the stronger, more frost-resistant and more durable the concrete.

Today, design specifications often define the class of concrete mix, which shows properties of the mix more precisely. The class of concrete mix denotes the permissible deviation from the mix quality. It shows the strength value obtained for an actual sample while the grade shows the estimated strength only. The class of concrete is marked with the letter ‘B’, and ranges from 3.5to 80. Classes B7.5 to B40 are used in domestic construction.

Р3 — workability factor measured by concrete slump test, with a slump of 10-15 cm. The mix is used for the construction of foundations, stairs, screeds, floors and for pouring into form works. This concrete mix must only be poured using special construction tools: vibrating pokers, vibrating screeds, concrete laying machines.

Р4 — workability factor measured by concrete slump test, with a slump of 16-21 cm. The mix is used in applications of any complexity level. Due to good workability (fluidity), it fills a form work completely, so that no pores or air voids are formed. The mix can be transported over a long distance by a concrete pump or a chute system.
